What are your favorite chill, silly, mildly intriguing or entertaining internet finds that I can use to build relationships with my high school students? We're learning virtually, and I had great success during fall semester with spending the first 10-15 minutes of class showing them something neat to play/discuss. But now we're headed into spring semester and I'm tapped out! Seeking anything you've seen on the internet lately that captured your interest for a few minutes. I've got examples inside... posted by lilac girl to Ask MetaFilter on Dec 31, 2020 at 6:08 PM 73 users marked this as a favorite
2020 has ruined my ability to enjoy TV that is anything other than gentle and kind. I’ve watched all the great British baking show that Netflix has to offer, same with Queer Eye and Schitt’s Creek. I’m looking for more shows in the same vein - ones that leave me with a smile on my face after watching. Any suggestions? posted by House of Leaves of Grass to Ask MetaFilter on Jan 2 at 6:45 AM 50 users marked this as a favorite
What are your favorite books like Tuesday Mooney Talks to Ghosts, but in the sense of "Characters who are all whacky and interesting to hang out with." Like E.L. Konigsburg books but for adults. Tuesday Mooney has characters with funky interests and a lot of different ages, which is what I’m looking for. I think I’m mostly looking for realistic fiction, mystery fiction or I suppose romance fiction for adults but really I want characters who are funky and interesting. posted by azalea_chant to Ask MetaFilter on Dec 27, 2020 at 2:10 PM 28 users marked this as a favorite
Our offer to purchase a house was accepted. We are now in the anxiety-filled waiting period while the inspection, appraisal, and mortgage underwriting processes are completed. We are also emptying out the tank in order to go through with the purchase and while I feel really great about the house we are buying, it's pretty nerve racking. In order to soothe my nerves, I am constantly googling for stories about home buyers. Can you tell me about your first year as a first time home buyer? posted by kmr to Ask MetaFilter on Dec 29, 2020 at 8:59 AM 24 users marked this as a favorite
Looking for songs that scratch the same itch as "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" & "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" by Blue Oyster Cult, "Don't Pay The Ferryman" by Chris de Burgh, "Space Oddity" by David Bowie, and "Major Tom (Coming Home)" by Peter Schilling. posted by jzb to Ask MetaFilter on Jan 1 at 8:23 AM 17 users marked this as a favorite
With the new year coming, I'm looking for some short motivational videos (10 minutes or less) by people who have changed their habits related to health. The changes could be around food, what they eat (such as eliminating unhealthy junk food), drinking, exercise. Not looking for how-to guides but rather people describing the inner experience of change and how much better they feel after changing a habit. Two examples inside. posted by daikon to Ask MetaFilter on Dec 30, 2020 at 10:16 AM 15 users marked this as a favorite
Songs that are musically pretty/poignant while addressing obscure or unorthodox subjects are super interesting to me. Examples I was thinking about recently were a couple of songs by Sufjan Stevens ("Concerning the UFO Sighting Near Highland, Illinois" and "John Wayne Gacy Jr."), and "Golden Brown" by The Stranglers (simultaneously about a love interest, and heroin). Do you have any other suggestions I could check out? posted by jackrational to Ask MetaFilter on Dec 27, 2020 at 6:44 AM 15 users marked this as a favorite
I just finished watching The Terror and now I'm curious to read more about the Franklin expedition. According to Google, there are three million books on the subject, so I was wondering which ones are the best for a general reader. Any recommendations?
readable prose is important
in-depth descriptions of each part of the ship, not as important
I'll be teaching a class on conspiracy theories and rhetoric, and most of my examples are aligned with the fringe elements of the Republican party. Obviously there is a lot of low hanging fruit. I'm wondering if there are any conspiracy theories that the left is prone to believe in? posted by mecran01 to Ask MetaFilter on Dec 29, 2020 at 2:54 PM 14 users marked this as a favorite
How do you make duck sauce specifically à la Chinese-American restaurants in New England?
This is a variant of duck sauce ubiquitous in the Boston area but that as far as I know hardly exists elsewhere. It has the texture of a watery slurry and tastes fresh and bright. It is not viscous or syrupy. No grocery-store duck sauce that I've tried before is of this variant. I have a vague memory of being told that it is a mixture of applesauce and soy sauce, and while I don't detect soy at all, the applesauce rings true-- heck, if you told me it's just pure thinned-out applesauce that actually sounds pretty believable.
Only looking for responses from people who know, or have a source that knows, about this specific type of duck sauce. posted by dusty potato to Ask MetaFilter on Dec 29, 2020 at 4:38 PM 13 users marked this as a favorite
Hey AnonGrandparents, it was so awesome so see everyone on the Christmas zoom! Kidanon always loves seeing his cousins and he enjoyed seeing their presents. He asked us if his present from AnonGpa is still in the mail. What should I tell him?

You talk a lot in your question about the way in which your friend didn't meet your expectations for your friendship but I could easily write these from your friend's perspective as ways in which you were not supportive of her.
If something wasn’t literally puking rainbows, she wouldn’t engage with it anymore because it “stressed her out”... [more] posted by peacheater to Ask MetaFilter on Dec 29, 2020 at 6:43 AM 108 users marked this as a favorite
Oh, anon, I wish I could give you such a big hug.
Can you give it a few days or a couple of weeks? Can you seek some therapy both individually and together?
It sounds like a lot of external pressure is informing his response, which can be worked through -- but it doesn't make it any less hurtful for you! Please don't disregard your feelings... [more] posted by librarina to Ask MetaFilter on Dec 30, 2020 at 1:32 AM 106 users marked this as a favorite
To me, it sounds like you are trying to talk yourself into wanting an abortion only because your husband is acting like a child.
I mean, you have been actively trying to get pregnant for over a year, and were just about to seek additional help from a fertility specialist.
I’m as Pro-Choice as they come, but how will you feel if you... [more] posted by blueberry to Ask MetaFilter on Dec 30, 2020 at 1:42 AM 102 users marked this as a favorite
I don’t understand how someone can change so drastically and become so self-focused
You might want to re-read what you've written here, then, and ask yourself when she started saying the same thing about you. You're describing a friend who's grown in a different direction from you, struggling with their physical and mental health in the... "I've always cared deeply about human rights. I met someone at a job in that field who became my best friend. It was a terrible job that took a truly heavy toll on both of us, but we supported each other through it and it was a relief to have found someone who I had so many things and views in common with.
But over time I found that the... [more] posted by trig to Ask MetaFilter on Dec 29, 2020 at 7:26 AM 68 users marked this as a favorite
I mean, it seems like they were actively trying to be hurtful, so telling them they succeeded probably won't change anything except make them glad that they successfully got under your skin. You should be working on protecting your kids from people who would use them as pawns in their shitty power game. You are in a position to hire full-time personal child care. She, on the other hand, is in a position where she has to do that kind of work and lives with more than one roommate. The nanny-hiring process tends to be involved and she hasn't been looking for other work because you promised her work. We are in the middle of a pandemic. Clearly,... I don't know if this will help you, but if I were in your shoes I would isolate the issues. For the sake of making your decision less complicated can you assume from this point on that your husband will not be part of the equation? At least then you can decide how you alone feel about the baby and also be prepared for all possible scenarios.... Modeling that you have to tolerate that kind of behavior is something your child may carry in a very negative way for their entire life, and make all sorts of relationships incredibly difficult for them. I cannot emphasize how damaging this can be for a child, not for them to experience it, but to having their parents participate and play their... I'd like to touch on an aspect of your post that hasn't yet been mentioned, which is that you deleted her from all your social media and have blocked her number on your phone. You say you tried to accept that your relationship with her would never be as close as you once had been, you say you tried to accept that this "downgraded" version... I'm sorry if this seems harsh, but it seems like you would prefer your friend be so miserable and unwell she dissociates/"breaks with reality" as long as she cares about the right things in the right way, to having better mental health but living a more normie lifestyle. I'm not sure she's the only one being self-focused here. In the... [more] posted by misskaz to Ask MetaFilter on Dec 29, 2020 at 6:12 AM 44 users marked this as a favorite
Call your abortion clinic and ask them how much time you have to decide whether or not to have an abortion. Abortion laws can vary greatly, and knowing whether you have 3 weeks or 5 months can help you then tackle all the other decisions. You may also be able to change your appointment to an informational one where they help you understand both... It is inconceivable to me that they didn’t do it on purpose (because otherwise they would have felt bad when the gift bragging started and tried to minimize it or tell your kid that his gift was en route). So I think addressing it directly is the way to go. Most bullies back down from direct conflict.

At the risk of bragging, I make incredible brussels sprouts. The secret is that I parboil them before I bake them. This avoids the problem you're describing. The insides are always perfectly cooked while the outsides aren't burnt.
Basically, I cut the brussels sprouts into bite-sized pieces (usually in half). Then I steam the brussels sprouts... [more] posted by ClaireBear to Ask MetaFilter on Jan 1 at 2:42 AM 35 users marked this as a favorite
First of all - I feel this; this year I also faced the fact that a once close friendship is probably over.
I honestly and sincerely don't think your friend was using you in the past. I think, if I went back in time to her back then and took her aside and asked her, "okay, real talk, are you kind of using thatsaskatchewangirl?" she... Personally, I would stay quiet and try to fly under the radar. They are probably too overwhelmed to deal with renting the other rooms out and are just avoiding thinking about it. If you push, and really remind them how much money they are losing, it might spur them to take action and fill the rooms. I think what you're planning to offer is going to...
